ABSTRACT
The classical Markoff theory of binary indefinite quadratic forms has been approached from a variety of different viewpoints. At one extreme it appears in the study of geodesic excursions out a singular end on a surface of constant negative curvature. In this note we shall describe the current state of the theory and show how it can be extended to a larger class of surfaces.
