ABSTRACT

Specular hematite is an important pigment used in anti-corrosion paints. The concentrates, which can be used in pigment production, should contain over 95% Fe2O3 and be ground below 100 microns. The experiments were conducted to obtain a paint-grade specular hematite concentrate by using Mozley multi-gravity separator. Specular hematite tailings coming from Aydin-Karacasu district containing 50–58% Fe2O3 grade was subjected to MGS tests. The effects of drum rotational speed (140–200 rpm) under different tilt” angles (4°-5°-60) were examined to determine the optimum recovery conditions. Other parameters have been kept at constant rates as follows; wash water rate (5 1/min), feed rate (1.5 1/min), amplitude (19 mm), frequency (5.8 cps). The aim of this study was to produce saleable specular hematite concentrate that is suitable for paint industry with a final concentrate assaying 97.91% Fe2O3 with recovery of 82.51% under optimal operating conditions.
