Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam (PTBA) started a new project that a new underground coal mine, or Ombilin III will start the mining operation in the 2000s to meet the necessary demand for increasing the production of Indonesian domestic coal.

This paper describes the importance of the joint research projects between Japan and Indonesia and discusses the influence of geological and mining factors related to the performance of main incline drivage with a heavy duty roadheader at Ombilin III.
