ABSTRACT

General geological observations indicate that the southern parts of Greenland and of Baffin Island (northern Canada) are separating from each other in consequence of an ongoing opening of Davis Strait. We present additional evidence for this view from the standpoint of morphotectonics: tectonic features expressing themselves in the morphology of the area. In particular, the orientation structure of rock-joints and of the fiords in the two areas is such that both types of features can be interpreted as predesigned by the shear in the neotectonic stress field.
