ABSTRACT

In 1983 the First International Symposium on Rock Fragmentation by Blasting was held in Lulea, Sweden. In 1987 the Second International Symposium on Rock Fragmentation by Blasting was held in Keystone, Colorado and again was felt to be highly successful. Dr. H. P. Rossmanith from the Technical University of Vienna agreed to head up the Education Working Group and Frank Chiapetta from Blasting Analysis International agreed to take on the Environmental Working Group. In spite of an assurance that reappointment would be near-automatic for as long as the Blasting Commission remained productive, undertakings can easily be overlooked, and even a small uncertainty makes long term planning difficult. The President of an ISRM Commission is empowered to “establish, direct and when necessary dissolve Working Groups of specialists in selected topics to accomplish tasks within the broader terms of reference of the Commission”.
