ABSTRACT

The introduction of a new measuring technique brings with it the obligation to decide what, exactly, to measure. This question seems quite straightforward until a literature review on “granulometry” shows that these questions have been examined in great depth in a number of other disciplines. Even the term “grain size” has several quite different interpretations, and there are several alternatives for graphical and statistical representation of fragment size distributions. The following review of the published literature on “granulometry” is based on a report to INCO Ltd., who have kindly released these materials for publication.
