ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a description of typical applications of low inertia scanner (LIS). It summarizes the performance provided by galvanometric and resonant scanners and shows how such performance is achieved by design. LIS have long been used by science and industry in optical scanning. These scanners were used in the early electrocardiograph recorder and in the first oscilloscope, as well as in the making of film sound track. Visual communication is one of the most demanding applications of the LIS. The numerous applications of visual communication can be classified under the following categories: print plate exposure, laser printers, phototransmission, photo enhancement and manipulation, phototype setting, computer output on microfilm and large-scale image projection. Images with large and changing information content are often displayed by large-scale projection. Scanned laser graphic projections are best known for the planetarium shows and animated "son et lumiere".
