ABSTRACT

The Bavarian Alps pose specific problems for landslide risk reduction, such as the geological diversity along the first front of the mountain range with its special tectonic conditions. Risk reduction in Bavaria is based on general information about possible natural dangers given to the responsible local authorities. In the past, knowledge about natural dangers was still present in the local population by oral tradition. As the traditional structures slowly disappear, today such information is collected by the Geological Survey and by the Water Authorities. In the case of proven hazard or doubt, the specific situation must be investigated in detail, primarily by private experts. To manage the flood of data about natural risks, databases and related Geographic Information Systems are applied. The procedure of collecting information and managing the data as well as the necessary technical background is explained. Finally, inherent problems and gaps are discussed.
