ABSTRACT

The Scenic Drive Landslide in the community of La Honda in San Mateo County, California, USA destroyed seven homes and a County road in the winter of 1997–98. The investigation of the landslide included downhole logging of large diameter borings and installation and monitoring of several inclinometers and piezometers. The investigation showed that this landslide is a portion of a much larger ancient landslide complex and that it was reactivated by the heavy 1997–98 El Niño rainfall following several years of above normal rainfall. With Federal Governmental assistance, the County will purchase the damaged properties and convert the landslide to open space. The County has not yet decided what level of mitigation they will provide to maintain the impacted County road.
