ABSTRACT

In our modem society, public awareness of risk, as well as media pressure, is pushing companies and government agencies to seek new ways to protect their interests. Organizations seek to manage risk in a rational manner, and to respond effectively to crises when they occur. Through the use of case studies and other real world examples, this paper demonstrates that the integration of the engineering approach, i.e. risk management, with a public relations approach, i.e. crisis management, offers an applicable and useful tool for the day-to-day management of operations which are exposed to natural or man-made hazards.
