ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that the Supplement of Vehicle System Dynamics were presented at the Third Herbertov Workshop, which took place at Herbertov in the Czech Republic over September 19–23. The workshop has been devoted to "Interactions of Railway Vehicles with the Track and its Substructure". Winkler's idea from 1867 to introduce the concept of an elastic foundation can be considered to be the beginning of scientific work in the field of track models. Winkler's model was adopted very quickly by railway engineers, as can be seen from a discussion which is found in the Minutes of Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers in London. The interaction of railway vehicles, track and substructure contains a lot of unsolved problems, the most important of which is perhaps the physical understanding of deterioration of track components under the action of passing vehicles. This need scientific co-operation and international exchange of information to approach the problem and finally to solve it.
