ABSTRACT

The Aga Khan Foundation East African school improvement initiative provides a unique insight into a sustained effort to build school improvement capacity and enhance student learning and attainment in a developing educational context. The chapter reviews the knowledge base about school improvement strategies most closely related to those employed in the Aga Khan Foundation programs. Unfortunately, the implementation of changes that positively affect the learning of students is very difficult to achieve. In the early phases of a school improvement effort, the process of initiation, implementation and institutionalization will be going on at least two levels. The first is the classroom level: putting into practice changes in curriculum focus and teaching strategy. The second is the school level, where the cycle of initiation, implementation and institutionalization is concerned with capacity building.
