ABSTRACT

The school improvement program evolved through three phases. Phases 1 and 2 focused on the development of teaching and learning resources and on curriculum planning for English, mathematics, and sciences. The Tanzanian education system operates on a 7-4-2 model of primary and secondary education. Primary education is offered mainly through publicly funded government schools. The government's priority since independence has been to provide basic education at the primary level. As primary school enrollment increased, secondary school enrollment remained fairly stable. The proportion of primary school graduates obtaining admission to secondary schools plummeted. At independence in 1961, more than 30% of students finishing primary school were admitted to secondary school. Aga Khan Mzizima Secondary School is a private, coeducational, nonsectarian, racially integrated day secondary school located in a middle- to low-income residential neighborhood of Dar-es-Salaam.
