ABSTRACT

This paper provides a case study of soil erosion in the Tianmu mountains, which are the headwater area of the beautiful Taihu lake watershed in China. Since 1987, 5 auto-climate stations and 14 test-plots of soil erosion have been established in this area. The major features of soil erosion in the Tianmu mountains are as follows: (1) imbalance of soil material circulation, (2) decrease of soil thickness and increase of the coarse soil, (3) reduction of soil fertility, and (4) ecological environmental degeneration and frequent hazards. At last, improved strategies for soil erosion control are being implemented.
