ABSTRACT

With CHESS’ initial area of concentration set on petroleum contamination, work is well under way with expert committees to provide consensus guidelines in the areas of analysis, environmental fate, risk assessment, and remediation. The committees are reviewing an array of methodologies and will be developing their scientific evaluations and recommendations over the next few months. By utilizing an expert system, the Council believes that the product will be scientifically and technically sound and easy to use. The orientation toward petroleum contaminated soils will enhance the likelihood that environmental and public health groups and agencies will adopt the CHESS product. The Council has charged the committees with evaluating relevant methodologies and approaches, and providing recommendations as to their use in the development of a comprehensive expert decision methodology. CHESS would not be possible without the generous support of a variety of federal agencies and private companies.
