ABSTRACT
The goal of technology selection is to choose the most cost effective and reliable treatment technology to achieve a desired clean-up objective in a reasonable amount of time. Waste and site characteristics are the two main issues that engineers must consider when selecting a remedial technology. Both of these issues fall under the site assessment category and would be completed during an Remedial Investigation / Feasibility Studyor an Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Facility Assessment. Under RCRA and Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) while the nomenclature in the remedial action process are different, the procedures are similar. While Superfund was created to address the problems of past waste disposal methods, RCRA was enacted to ensure that past methods of disposal are corrected. Under CERCLA and RCRA, states are allowed to develop their own treatment requirements separate from the federal government.
