ABSTRACT

Vegetation management in forest nurseries and woodlots is unique with respect to the array of problems encountered, the variety of tools available to address weed problems and the social and economic context in which vegetation management decisions are made. The purpose of this chapter is to describe the nature and scope of weed management practices as they are used today in forestry. We hope to describe the available tools and the manner in which they can be properly used, and to discuss the consequences of alternatives. The biological and economic considerations needed to develop integrated approaches to vegetation management and important future challenges that will need to be considered in moving the science forward as well as preserving suitable tools for growing trees are discussed.
