ABSTRACT

The logistics environment is rapidly changing, people will continue to be important, the skills required will change, training has a role to play. Logistics spans a wide field of business activity and at the core of logistics thinking is trade-off analysis. If training is to deliver a business benefit by improving performance, then it must contribute to the achievement of an organization's goals. Training is frequently perceived as being expensive, a nice thing to do when money is available. Come recession and cutbacks, the training budget will be one of the first to suffer. Like any other business activity, training can be expensive if it is badly planned, badly organized, badly conducted and badly controlled. The step involves determining the business needs. It is likely that these will be linked to either deficiencies in performance levels or to the introduction of new ideas or technologies.
