Tertiary basins in the Northern Somalia continental margin: Their structural significance in the Gulf of Aden rift system

The Tertiary basins of the Northern Somalia continental margin developed in arcuate fault systems. This structural pattern is a common feature along both margins of the Gulf of Aden and has been inherited since the early stages of the rifting. It can be compared with the western branch of the East Africa Rift System (e.g. Lake Tanganyica, Lake Malawi) which records relatively immature stages of continental divergence.
