ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the palynostratigraphic data from pre-drift sediments of East Africa and Madagascar. These predominantly continental sediments have been assigned to nine depositional cycles separated by unconformities. Cycle I is represented by the glacial and periglacial beds of Tanzania and Madagascar. Continental deposits of cycle V are characterized palynologically by assemblages correlatable with the Lunatisporites pellucidus and Protohaploxypinus samoilovichii Zone. Based on palynological evidence, an Early Triassic age has been recorded for part of the Bokh Shale of the Ogaden Basin. Continental deposits of cycle IX occur in Tanzania as well as Madagascar. These are the Nandanga Formation of the Luwegu Basin and unit IIc2 of the Isalo Group of the Morondava Basin which are regarded as early Bajocian in age. The Nandanga Formation contains basalt flows which may be coeval with those reported from Middle Jurassic strata of the Chesterfield-1 well in Madagascar.
