ABSTRACT

The banded iron formation (BIF) at Wadi Karein is one of fifteen known occurrences in the central Eastern Desert of Egypt. It occurs within the Pan-African layered island arc volcanogenic association. The volcanogenic association is formed mainly of subaqueous tholeiitic basalts and calcalkaline andesite and dacite lava flows intercalated with subordinate amounts of andesitic to dacitic pyroclastics and volcanogenic greywackes. The volcanics and volcaniclastics may occur intimately intercalated with one another or prevail independently over considerable areas with subordinate intercalations of the other. The BIF occur within the predominantly volcaniclastic sequence. The whole succession is very weakly metamorphosed.
