ABSTRACT

A variational method is developed for analysis of earth dam breach erosion. This method involves a nonlinear partial differential equation which describes the erosion process. The equation yields the depth-time relation. With another equation describing the breadth-depth relation, the breach erosion can be completely described in space and time. The dissipation coefficient and fluidity function arising in an erosion process are considered to be unique functions of hydraulic head. The variational method is demonstrated by an example of the Buffalo Creek Dam failure.
