ABSTRACT

Srinagar is the summer capital of the state of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K), India (Fig. 1). The Kashmir Valley, located as it is at the crossroads of one of the natural barriers of Asia, has attracted outsiders for more than two thousand years (Stein, 1900). Srinagar City has grown on the banks of the River Jhelum and, with a backdrop of snow capped Himalayan mountains, many lakes, canals, waterways and the famous Moghul gardens, it presently attracts on average around 850,000 visitors in any normal year.
