ABSTRACT

The reservoir deformation due to the fluid flow during reservoir fluid production can be described by a general three-dimensional deformation field coupled with a three-dimensional fluid flow field. In general, the full system of governing equations resulting from coupled geomechanics and fluid flow is complicated to solve by the fact that the governing equations are nonlinear and coupled. In this paper, A finite element numerical model for a fluid flow in a deforming porous medium is presented. The displacements and the fluid pressure are taken as primary unknowns of the model. Verification of the numerical model is obtained by comparison with published analytical results. For showing the application values and method on this model, a numerical example that provides vertical and horizontal displacement as a result of fluid withdrawal in an oil reservoir is carried out.
