ABSTRACT

The equipment used for sorting raw fish in the factory is mainly based on scales, although some advanced factories use length sorting equipment. This chapter presents a flexible system for length estimation of cod. The level of complexity for a vision system for the fish and fish product sorting is determined by the feeding part of the system. In the factory manual sorting is again often used for both the fish and fish products. The use of computer vision in fish and fish product sorting shows great promise. There will always be need to compromise between the complexity of the vision system and the demands on the feeding system. The fish product machines produce even within a given batch highly irregular products. Sorting fish in water is required in fish farms to count fish, estimate their length and/or weight, and to estimate the weight growth curve of fish.
