ABSTRACT

Alcohol and other drugs are an increasing problem for modern society. In 1990 Transperth, the organisation providing Perth’s bus services, commenced a comprehensive training programme referred to as ‘Transit Ambassador’ which was purchased from Canada. The programme was designed by the Occupational Health Co-ordinator and the Welfare Co-ordinator at Transperth, with the assistance of Health Promotion Services of the Health Department of Western Australia, Alcohol and Drug Authority and Indrad Services, whose contribution is gratefully acknowledged. The programme has had excellent management and union support, with other union groups requesting this style of programme for their members. Participants were bus operators drawn from several depots. They took part in the programme in groups which were composed of operators from several depots. Evaluation was mainly through confidential formal feedback from bus operators. The response of bus operators attending the groups has been very encouraging, if judged by the formal confidential feedback sheets.
