ABSTRACT

Countermeasures to combat fatigue are varied and include publicity to make drivers aware of the dangers of fatigue, the installation of visual or audio stimulation within the road environment and the provision of suitable rest areas so that fatigued drivers can rest before resuming their journey. The level of visual stimulation one receives from the environment in which one is travelling varies greatly with the individual. Studies in the US have shown that by using a wider edge line the visual perception of edge lines by those affected by alcohol was increased, resulting in better vehicle trajectories on roads treated with wider edge lines. The level of shoulder maintenance subsequent to the installation of edge lines is dramatically reduced, effecting very significant savings in that area. A more development has been the installation of profile edge lines which combine the visual advantages of painted edge lines with an audible noise when driven over.
