ABSTRACT

Various treatments to reverse or prevent these changes have been studied including the most obvious one, insulin. Impairment of cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum function and impairments in various membrane enzymes were also prevented by insulin treatment in streptozotocin (STZ) diabetic rats. Many countries, especially in the developing world, have a long history of the use of herbal remedies in diabetes and many other diseases and many schools of medicine or pharmacy offer courses in pharmacognosy. Several of the complications of diabetes occur in STZ diabetic rats and treatment interventions can be focused on particular organs, such as the eye. Molybdate has been demonstrated to have effects similar to vanadium and selenium in partially correcting the symptoms of diabetes in STZ diabetic rats. The study of vitamin C in STZ diabetic animals is of importance because people with diabetes may have a deficiency of ascorbic acid even when intake levels are normal.
