ABSTRACT

The evaluation of permanent displacements of dry cohesionless sands during earthquakes is carried out by means of 2D finite element dynamic analyses, taking into account two constitutive models of the soil, with a different degree of complexity. The effect of the frequency and the amplitude of the excitation, the number of load cycles and the combined action of the vertical component of the excitation is discussed and compared with previous experimental work. Emphasis is given to the comparison with the settlements calculated by 2D analyses in the presence of simple structure-foundation systems.
