ABSTRACT

Environmental management is accomplished principally in response to requirements in environmental laws and regulations. In more years "surrogate regulators" and the emergence of the International Organization for Standardizations (ISO) have become important in affecting environmental management approaches. Environmental management has as its objective the protection of human health and well being, and the protection (preservation and conservation) of life forms and their habitats. Environmental statutes at the federal and state levels, as well as ordinances at the local government level, have this same broad objective. The solution to environmental problems typically involves the cooperation of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary teams. Scientists, engineers, sociologists, and lawyers frequently work together to design and implement processes or procedures to solve or prevent a real or perceived environmental problem. Legal, economic, natural systems, and engineered systems components may need to be integrated to arrive at an appropriate solution.
