ABSTRACT

Industrial hygiene is an area of specialization in the field of industrial health and safety in which the industrial hygienist is trained to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control health hazards that arise in the industrial work environment. It involves consideration of major factors such as chemical stresses, physical agents, and biological and ergonomic hazards that can cause sickness or serious discomfort to workers. The purpose of the Occupational Safety and Health Act is "to assure so far as possible every working man and woman in the nation safe working conditions and to preserve our human resources." The major concerns in the field of industrial hygiene include the various chemical stresses, and physical, biological, and ergonomic hazards that can cause sickness or serious discomfort to workers. Chemical stresses may include chemical dusts, liquids, gases, fumes, vapors, smoke, and mists that present dangers when they are swallowed, breathed, or make contact with the eyes or skin.
