ABSTRACT

This chapter summarises various engineering properties of rocks of the Wianamatta Group. It also presents the engineering properties of soils at various locations. Insitu moisture content of the clays is close to the Plastic Limit. The results of unconfined compressive strength and point load tests for the Ashfield Shale are discussed in relation to weathering zones and seismic velocity. Due to the diversity of rock types within each formation, the engineering properties of each formation must be considered in relation to component rocktype, degree of weathering and fracturing, moisture content and other variables which will affect rock strength. At the time of writing, no direct shear test data on jointed or intact rock was available for any of the rock types associated with the Wianamatta Group. The chapter also includes material performance and degradation aspects of shales in service in existing road pavements.
