ABSTRACT

Automatic transmission fluids (ATF) are examined in a worldwide context. The function, use and application of ATF, both in the automotive industrial areas, are shown and discussed. The main requirements and test procedures, along with the current original equipment manufacturers (OEM) specifications are reviewed and projections made as to future ones.

The chemistry involved in achieving key ATF properties is examined and a historical overview of its evolution since the early days presented. A comparison of the special capabilities of various chemical approaches is made and pertinent conclusions drawn as to the most promising type of ATF technology.
