ABSTRACT

The US/PRC Workshop on Experimental Methods in Earthquake Engineering was held at Tongji University in 1992, which was successful and has had an important influence on the seismic structural testing in China. The authors think even though the computer and numerical technique are advanced and effective, the structural testing methods are still the most powerful, basic and determined methods in studying structural seismic behavior, and they provide the foundation for the development of earthquake engineering. Nowadays, the researchers in China reach a relative high level on shaking table testing methods of high-rise buildings. However, there are still much attention needed to the detailed numerical analysis of the test results and optimizing the testing methods. On the other hand, the similitude theory for nonlinear behavior of structures is still incomplete. A lot of problems need to be solved in the future.
