ABSTRACT

In this study, the warpage of mouldings produced with a hybrid mould with the core in the epoxy-aluminium composite is compared with an identical conventional steel mould.

2 WARPAGE

During the injection moulding process, the polymer is subject to a thermo-mechanical environment that determines the final dimensions of the parts. Warpage is a distortion of the shape of the mouldings that occurs when differential or non-uniform shrinkage takes place during cooling. Various causes contribute for warpage (Fischer and Maier 2003): Differential orientation: the moulded material tends to

1 INTRODUCTION

Warpage is one of the problems of many parts produced by the injection moulding process. The increasing market demand and the need to compete in high challenging marketplaces are forcing companies to minimize structural defects, like the warpage of the parts, as well as to arrive at the best possible quality. Low cost, quality and promptness in the placement of the products in the market are challenges that the companies face constantly.
