ABSTRACT
It is a worldwide fact that about 90% of world trade depends on maritime industry.Without the help of maritime transportation, export and import of goods in large scales would not have been possible. Expansion of seaborne trade will continue, bringing benefits to both consumers and exporters as shipping is considered as the most cost efficient mode of transportation worldwide. There are around 50,000 merchant ships trading internationally, transporting every kind of cargo. The world fleet is registered in over 150 nations, manned by over a million seafarers of virtually every nationality with millions of shore based support staff, trading billions of dollars worth of cargo around the world. So improvement of safety of ships and protection of marine environment to achieve sustainable growth should be the utmost concern.
