ABSTRACT

Appropriate scientifically grounded and practically applicable models need to be provided for this purpose.

2.2 State of research

The fundamental approaches to maintenance management are transferable among the various types of infrastructure and are generally based on methods that are already being applied in other areas, e.g., maintenance of production facilities (Gercbach 1977; Narayan 2004). The respective specific requirements placed on the maintenance management differ, however, in individual cases. The risk of shutdowns and/or system safety play a crucial role, for example, in the case of bridges (Liu & Frangopol 2005) or production facilities (Narayan 2004).
