ABSTRACT

Another damping strategy studied is vertically distributed multiple tuned mass dampers (TMDs). TMDs are generally located near the top of tall buildings to reduce wind-induced dynamic responses of tall buildings, because they performmore effectivelywhen they are located where more lateral displacement occurs. However, as a result, very valuable space near the top floor is sacrificed to contain TMDs. This paper studies the potential of vertically distributed multiple small TMDs, compared to the conventional systems composed of one or two large TMDs at the top of the building.
