ABSTRACT

Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is one of the most recognized deleterious phenomena in concrete and has been a major concern in more than fifty countries of the world. The reaction occurs between reactive silica present in some aggregates and hydroxyl ions of the alkalis, mainly come from cementitious materials (SCMs) of the mixture, and produce an alkalisilica gel. In the presence of moisture, the gel expands which results the concrete cracks, spalling and other deterioration mechanisms.
