ABSTRACT
Initially, passive damping systems were added to improve the seismic performance of buildings which already satisfy the strength and drift requirements of seismic codes, with the goal of reducing earthquake damage. The 2000 NEHRP recommended provisions (BSSC 2001) however, allow seismic design of buildings with passive damping systems which meet, but not necessarily exceed the expected performance of buildings with conventional lateral force resisting systems.
