ABSTRACT
If the Load and Resistance Factor Design approach is followed, specific partial safety factors and seismic design spectra are used. They are calibrated so as to guarantee a fixed level of structural reliability for each limit state. Such design approach, even though recognizes uncertainties in structural behaviour, doesn’t allow the designers to control the actual probability to
exceed a specific performance in the case of an event, the earthquake ground motion, which is uncertain.
