ABSTRACT

Reliable collapse assessment of structural systems under seismic excitations based on the methodology described in Ibarra and Krawinkler (2005), Zareian (2006) and ATC-63 (2008) necessitates the development of relationships for deterioration modeling of structural components. The focus here is on the common collapse mode associated with sidesway instability in which an individual story (or a series of stories) displaces sufficiently laterally so that the second order P-Delta effects, amplified by component deterioration, fully offset the first order story shear resistance and dynamic instability occurs, i.e., the structural system loses its gravity load resistance.
