ABSTRACT

The proposed modal strength reduction factor approach is used for the seismic design of a steel moment resisting frame for illustration purposes. Its validation is done by comparing it against non-linear inelastic dynamic analysis and the usual code-based approach of employing one common value of the strength reduction factor for each mode. It is concluded that the use of modal strength reduction factors instead of a single value for that factor for all modes, leads to more accurate seismic design results in a more rational way.
