ABSTRACT

The lateral seismic shear of the i-th story above the ground level is determined by multiplying the weight of the building above the i-th story with the coefficient Ci. In Figure 1, the lateral seismic shear coefficients by Eq. (1) of the eight story model are compared with those determined by the previous seismic regulations. Here, it is assumed that all stories have the same mass and the natural fundamental period is 0.9 s. And to calculate Ci by Eq. (1), C0, Z and Rt are set at 0.2,

1.1 Background

Japanese seismic design regulations for buildings were largely revised in 1980. These regulations have been enforced since June 1, 1981. The revised regulations evaluate dynamic response effects more appropriately than previous one and take in the concept of ultimate strength design.
