ABSTRACT

For many years prior to the recent repair and restoration work there had been differential slab settlement observed at deck level at the roundhead (the remainder of the breakwater has no concrete deck). Large sections of slab had settled in the region of 15-20 mm and required anti-trip painting marks at the edges for the safety of tourist and walkers. In addition to the evidence of movement at deck level, distress was also seen to be accelerating on the roundhead vertical walls with facing stones being pulled out more frequently. The remainder of the 600 m length of the breakwater remained undamaged.
