ABSTRACT

As mentioned in Section 1, the need for the accurate assessment of steel-reinforced concrete is paramount. In some cases corrosion can be seen from the outside of the structure through spalling and cracking of the concrete. Corrosion can also be seen from the staining of the structure which occurs as a result of the corrosion process. Despite these tell-tale signs however, corrosion can occur without giving any external indication of what is happening inside. Undetected corrosion leads to structural weakening and, in some cases, partial or total collapse of the structure. It is, therefore, of major importance to have a reliable and accurate technique for corrosion assessment. The techniques used to conduct structural assessment fall into two categories: destructive testing and non-destructive testing.
