ABSTRACT

Several studies have been conducted for the reliability analysis of the bearing capacity of shallow foundations. For example, Babu et al. (2006) carried out a reliability analysis of a foundation resting on cohesive soil based on Prandtl’s solution. Larkin (2006) proposed a reliability analysis for foundations subjected to multidirectional seismic loading by considering the shear strength and the probabilistic distribution of ground acceleration. FORM is applied to the bearing capacity of strip footings under the assumption that the shear strength is variable (Masshih et al. 2008). Griffith et al. (2001, 2002) and Fenton and Griffith (2003) carried out a probabilistic study on the bearing capacity of a rough rigid strip footing on a weightless cohesive soil to assess the influence of randomly distributed undrained shear strength.
