ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: The evolution of wholesaling moves through characteristic phases. The stage in which wholesalers are operating in a specific country is determined by the level of economic development. The growth of the cash and carry trader in the South African distribution conduit from 1960 to 2007 was highlighted. The development of the informal sector and the allotment channels which were created for the spaza shop showed the important role that the cash and carry wholesaler plays in the supply pathway.
