ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: This chapter examines the contribution of the energy and environmental sectors towards sustainable economic development using the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, a US territory, as the case study site. The goal was to develop a strategic, long-term macroeconomic approach that reflects real-world requirements and conditions. Although the promotion of sustainable economic development is the official policy of the island’s government, the real meaning of sustainability remains poorly understood. Linking this type of growth and business is essential for understanding that over the long term, economic security depends on environmental well-being. The territory must endeavour to achieve full participation in the global economic community. In addition, it must attain the development of a culture of quality, as well as a public policy agenda and a business agenda that will promote sustainable socioeconomic development, prosperity, better environmental compliance and an overall improved, and improving, quality of life. If the case study region can optimize the cultivation of its human capital, protect and conserve its water supply, and curb excessive energy costs, it will have a bright socioeconomic development and future.
