ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: The beneficial use of activated carbons for environmental purposes is reviewed. Activated carbons can be the product of waste recycling from agricultural by-products, industrial or municipal wastes. They are commonly used as an efficient and versatile adsorbent for air purification, water and wastewater treatment, and hydrogen storage. The main discussion is divided into six major parts: (i) the activated carbons production from diverse precursors and then their diverse applications, with (ii) water purification and (iii) wastewater treatment, (iv) gas purification, (v) activated carbon regeneration and (vi) hydrogen storage.
